Volume as a measurement

Volume is the three-dimensional counterpart to area. While area is a measure of how much space an object occupies in two-dimensional space, volume is this same measure in three-dimensional space. There are many commonly used units of volume. The unit of volume used is largely dependent on the size of the object being measured. For instance, measuring the volume of a single drop of water in liters would give us a value of approximately 0.00005 liters, whereas measuring it in milliliters would give us a value of 0.05 milliliters. When working with many numbers, using the appropriate units can make the process far more efficient and lower the probability of making calculation errors.

The above measurements of volume are measurements in the International System of Units (SI). The SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m3). A liter is equivalent to a cubic decimeter (dm3). The liter is a more commonly used measure of volume and is part of the metric system. Other units of volume, such as those in the imperial and US customary systems of units include pints, quarts, gallons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, and more. The definitions of these units of volume can also differ between systems. For example, a fluid ounce in the US customary system is equivalent to approximately 0.03 liters, while a fluid ounce in the imperial system is approximately 0.028 liters.

Most typically, the volume of a container, such as a mug, is actually a measure of its capacity, or how much liquid or gas the container can hold, rather than the actual amount of space that the container displaces. Below are a few conversions of some commonly used units of volume:

  • 1 cubic meter = 1000 liters
  • 1 liter = 1000 ml
  • 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liter
  • 1 US gallon = 16 US cups
  • 1 US cup = 8 US fluid ounce
  • 1 US fluid ounce = 2 US table spoon = 6 US tea spoon
